About Argyle Lake State Park

Argyle Lake State Park is located in McDonough County, Illinois, near the small town of Argyle. The park centers around a 93-acre man-made lake created in the 1940s, providing essential habitat for fish and waterfowl and a focus for outdoor recreation. The surrounding 1,045 acres encompass rolling hills and mixed hardwood forest typical of west-central Illinois. Established in 1948, the park preserves a diverse ecosystem including oak-hickory forests, wetlands, and grasslands that support species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and an assortment of migratory birds. Visitors can enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, as well as paddling and boating on the lake. The park’s trail system includes about 7 miles of scenic, multi-use trails that wind through woodland and lakeshore environments. It also features a campground with sites for both tents and RVs, picnic areas, and a playground, making it family-friendly. Outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the park for birdwatching, nature photography, and seasonal hunting opportunities in designated areas. Over time, Argyle Lake State Park has become a favored destination for locals and travelers seeking a quiet spot for fishing, hiking, and experiencing Illinois' natural landscapes. The park balances recreation with conservation efforts aimed at protecting native plants and wildlife in this region of the state.
